Foxtrot and Julie
Foxy has been sitting in the paddock for the past 24 months enjoying what he thought was "early" retirement.
He is a 14 year old Chestnut Thoroughbred - who had been in work a few years ago, but his previous owner had got married and started a family, so he was going to waste in the paddock. He is naturally a lovely, gentle horse, but through the lack of work and handling he had become quite full of himself, and his manners left much to be desired - he had become the dominant horse in the paddock, and had become disrespectful with other horses and humans!!!
So whilst I knew he had a fantastic history of good solid training - the prospect of getting on him after his 2 year break was daunting - and he was becoming at times difficult to handle due to lack of manners. A friend of mine, who is an experienced rider borrowed him for a few months - but he was returned - as he had developed some inappropriate behaviour both on and off the ground making him not enjoyable and at times not safe to ride!!
So I rang Jason after seeing and hearing about his training methods via Chaff Chat, and arranged for Foxy to go to Jason for some Re-schooling. Foxy stayed with Jason for 3 weeks - and the comparison between the horse I dropped off and then returned to see 3 weeks later was remarkable.
After 3 weeks Jason had Foxy behaving with impeccable manners, totally aware and respectful of human handlers. Jason had given Foxy a lot of groundwork training which then led to the riding portion of his re-schooling. The groundwork skills were easy to follow (as I am not the most co-ordinated horse-owner) but I was able to learn and continue these skills with no stress at all.
Jason then showed me the riding portion of his education - and there was the old Foxy back again - going forward calmly and willingly, no sign of any rushing, reefing, attempted rearing or head tossing, just a lovely calm forward horse that anyone would feel confident to ride.
Thank you so much Jason - for returning the old Foxy, if not an "improved" version!! It is now 6 months since his re-education, and Foxy is still very calm, and an absolute pleasure to ride. He has even had another 2 month break during this time, and when bought back into work - after a few minutes of the groundwork skills that Jason had showed me, I felt more than confident to hop back on without feeling even slightly nervous. I am not a confident rider at the best of times - so for me to ride a horse after a break is daunting - but Foxy is an absolute delight now. Thank you Jason - your methods and training have given me a fantastic horse to continue with, rather than one I was nervous of!! I will be sending my youngsters up to Jason for their training and breaking, as I have now seen Jason's methods work, for both horse and rider!!!
